Born
and raised in Moncton, New Brunswick, I have been drawing and painting since
my early childhood years. While growing up, our family spent weekends
and vacations at the beaches and rivers throughout the Atlantic provinces and
rural Quebec. So many great memories are attached to these places.
They continue to influence my work thru the process of gathering reference
material, sketching or painting on location and creating the final paintings
in my studio. Being a self-taught artist, much of my success is
attributed to the valuable influence and guidance of artists with whom I have
studied and painted along with my dedication to developing my own style.
Artist's
Statement: My
work has evolved from realism to a more organic, romantic construction of
simple elements. My medium of interest has gone from watercolor to liquid
acrylic paint and acrylic mediums on canvas. The transition from
watercolor to acrylic was seamless since the same techniques apply. My
canvas is prepared with several coats of gesso with added mediums to build up
a textured painting surface. After wetting the canvas, many washes of
color are applied by pouring, spattering, rubbing and dry brushing as I
progress towards completion of the painting. I enjoy working in this
state of mind where not every step is planned and controlled. That is
the exciting part of working with watermedia....sometimes there are some great
surprises once the paint dries.
"What
is a painting but the recorded tracks of the instruments and gestures of the
heart, mind and body of the painter". - Frank Webb.
