]]><![CDATA[My Bison Skull project]]>Sun, 14 Jun 2026 20:37:26 GMThttps://www.carolemalcolm.com/blog/my-bison-skull-projectWell I've had fun working on a new project!  It all started with a gift of this handsome bison skull from our neighbor who owns Big Valley Bison just south of Big Valley, Alberta.  Awesome business and the meat is delicious!

I wanted the design to be a Christian cross but still maintain a feel of southwestern especially with the colors.  We always had a cross hanging in a prominent part of our home when I was growing up and wanted to pay homage to this somehow.  I did have one side of the jaw as something extra to practice on to see how my paints behave on an actual bone as opposed to canvas.

I had to contend with the crack on the front nose part that was not symmetrical so I chose just to ignore that issue.  Was pretty happy with the basic design by this point, I would add more details later.

I found some old leather belts at an antique mall, no buckles on them but the leather was soft and weathered and I like the thought of something old being part of this project.  Still needed more details on the cross though.

You can see the lovely detailed leather work on this old belt that a craftsperson spent a lot of time making, it's just beautiful!

Added some more details to the cross.  I think it's pretty much done but I will prop it up in a corner of the studio to keep looking at it for awhile to be sure.  May have to try another one, my son, an avid hunter, tells me he has a deer skull he has cured and is ready to paint.....stay tuned!

]]><![CDATA[Upcoming Art Show and Flowers!]]>Sat, 25 Apr 2026 19:14:01 GMThttps://www.carolemalcolm.com/blog/upcoming-art-show-and-flowers     Happy Spring....even though it is currently snowing here in central Alberta ha.  Vibe Arts on Vancouver Island is having a spring art show called "Florescence".  It opens a week from now and is featuring four of my new floral paintings.
     Over the winter I have been busy sketching and painting flowers that have a bit of meaning or some type that I have growing in my garden.  Please have a read of the little blurbs following each photo below.  Enjoy!

"Floral Study 14125", a 30 inches by 30 inches. This painting is inspired by a beautiful Azealia bush that was growing in the garden at our last house.  It was the "Northern Hi-Lights" variety, a sweet cold hardy one that could thrive in our Canadian climate and in the shady part of the property.

"Floral Study 14225", 36 inches by 36 inches.  At our last property we had an apple tree that usually had great blooms in spring. I worked to capture the translucence of the delicate white petals with touches of pink at the edges as the sun shone on the blossoms. The deer loved to come by to take advantage of the apples that dropped to the ground in the fall constantly setting off the driveway alarm so you knew they were there.

"Floral Study 13925", 24 inches by 24 inches.  This painting developed from sketches and photos of fuchsias that were part of a Mother's Day potted plant that my son Ray and daughter-in-law Krystle gave to me.  So nice to be living near them now!

"Floral Study 13925", 24 inches by 24 inches.  We have moved around a few times over the years and each time we do I save seeds from this particular coneflower called "Indian Summer" so I can grow it again at the next place.   I first fell in love with it over 20 years ago in my sister Linda's garden.  A beautiful variety that reminds me of her and the home I grew up in where she now lives.

There's still snow on the ground outside my studio window but I've been busy painting these flowers while waiting for spring to arrive. The photos were taken from my garden last summer, looking forward to seeing them come up once again. 
These paintings are headed to the Oceanside Gallery on Vancouver Island in time for their special flower themed show in May.
Think I'll try making some more but much larger next time, here are some pics showing the  progress how these paintings evolved:

Great news!  Honored to have my work accepted into this year's Invictus Games art show thru the Veteran Artist Collective.  I am especially happy to have one of my paintings featured as the show poster for this special art show featuring veteran artists from across Canada.
I offered 9 pieces and they accepted all of them woohoo!  Four of them in my usual style plus the 5 poppy paintings dedicated to our Afghan veterans.  Couldn't think of a better venue to showcase them.  Great way to start the new year off!

While it's snowing outside I am working on a new series of fall Treescapes.  At this stage a lot of the splashing of paint is done.  Moving on to palette knife now......
